Political Controversy over "Frozen" at EPCOT

7/28/2014

One of the hottest animated movies to come out of Disney since the Lion King has caused an international controversy in Orlando which is not something that you typically see in everyday theme park happenings. According todailyfinance.com, Norway is upset with how Disney’s Epcot center is handling the Frozen phenomenon that has swept the nation by storm over the past year. The back of the Epcot is where the World Showcase is located. This is where international countries host and help finance pavilions that feature merchandise, restaurants, and attractions. Norway is one of only two countries that have an actual ride as a part of their pavilion. The country has said that the days of the Maelstrom boat ride may be coming to an end.

According to the article, there has been wide speculation that the ride could be closing soon to make way for a new ride that will relate to the film Frozen. News agencies in Norway say that the country is going to stop funding the pavilion and the ride could close as early as October to make way for the new Frozen ride. Disney claims that they have offered a deal where Norway would pay $9 million in order to update the pavilion as a platform for the country.

Disney also states that they were taken off guard of the success of the movie and the Norway area of the park began seeing an influx of visitors. The stores began removing merchandise off the shelves of stores to put in Frozen merchandise and added a meet and greet area so that children could meet the two princesses from the movie. The movie takes place in a fictional land called Arendelle, but the movie animators went to Norway to bring a Scandinavian sense to the movie. The country is upset because it seems that the platform is promoting more of a fictional land than the culture and lifestyle of Norway.

Accident on Skyhawk at Cedar Point Injures Two

Last night, Cedar Point's Skyhawk experienced an accident that injured two people. At around 10PM, one of the cables on the Skyhawk ride vehicle detached. Reports from eyewitnesses say that the cable then knocked down a significant portion of the fencing separating the ride area from the midway. Two guests were injured in the incident. One was taken to a local hospital for evaluation while another was treated on scene. It is unclear if the guests were injured while they were on ride or when they were viewing the ride. According to the Theme Park Maniacs, the injuries include one man who suffered facial injuries when debris hit him and one boy who had a broken leg. Specific injuries though were not confirmed by the park. According to the Plain Dealer, park spokesperson Bryan Edwards stated, "Safety is our top priority at Cedar Point. Skyhawk will remain closed until our investigation is complete and the ride can safely reopen."

Skyhawk which opened in 2006 is the world's largest swing ride swinging riders up to 125 feet in the air. Last season though, the ride experienced many mechanical issues that required either the entire ride or half the ride to be closed for the majority of the year.

After 66 days of waiting and more clues than one can count, Holiday World finally let the cat or should I say bird out of the bag. Tonight, Thunderbird was officially unveiled to the adoring public during a live stream beamed directly from Santa Claus, IN. The crowd was definitely not disappointed by Thunderbird, the parks first steel roller coaster. The $22 million coaster is more than double what the park has paid for any other single ride. Thunderbird is the first winged launch coaster built by B&M and will also be the first time the company itself has designed a launch mechanism. The ride track sports a brilliant orange color that is offset by the vibrant blue of the bird shaped trains. The launch will take riders from zero to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. The coaster also features 3,035 feet of track starting with a 140 high Immelmann loop followed by a 125 standard loop. Also included in the ride is a Horseshoe, an Elevated Spiral, a Zero-G roll, a S curve, 2 “headchopper” keyholes and a 360 in-line twist. Thunderbird will also feature not one but two crossovers with the park's other famous coaster, The Voyage. Construction is already underway for Thunderbird and it is expected to open next Spring.

Around 4:30 P.M. an 18 year old Icelandic teenager was killed on the Inferno roller coaster at Terra Mitica in Spain. The teenager was flung from the ride but was alive when paramedics arrived. The teen had suffered multiple fractures and a head wound. He later died of cardiac arrest about an hour later. According to the UK Mirror, Benidorm's National Police said, "We are still investigating and can't give out any information about the victim or his age or nationality at this stage." The teen was believed to be attending the park with his dad, brother and friend.

The park released a statement today as well that says (translated from Spanish):
"Inferno has official certification by a competent external company safety of attractions that conducts periodic reviews of the same-that guarantees the optimal performance of the attraction with optimal security. Similarly, the maintenance staff of Terra Mitica amusement park daily check the correct operation of the attraction. Each of these reviews is recorded in the internal documents of the company which has been handed over to the CID. For now, the causes of the accident are unknown. Terra Mitica continue to investigate the reasons for such unfortunate events as the park, along its 14 years of operation, has had an unblemished safety."

The roller coaster involved is an Intamin 4th dimension roller coaster referred to as a "ZacSpin." This style of roller coaster has two separate safety system in place including an over the shoulder harness and a seat-belt that secures it in place. Initial reports claim that the harness failed which caused the teen to fall from the ride.

Last Thursday, guests at Dollywood were treated to a special surprise as Katy Perry was in attendance at the park. Katy Perry, a fan of Dolly Parton, decided to attend the park for a day of fun and roller coasters while having some extra time to spend in Tennessee. According to Wes Ramey, Dollywood spokesperson, "She rode Wild Eagle twice so she enjoyed that. She stayed for the fireworks too, so she made sure that she had a chance to get the full guest experience. She wanted to come in and be a normal Dollywood guest." The park also said that she had a chance to sample the cinnamon bread and enjoyed that as well. MTV also reported that while at the park, Katy visited Dolly's Closet attraction. Here fans can purchase Dolly Parton inspired looks and have them custom tailored. However, it is unclear if Katy will actually be unveiling any of these looks on her current tour. From all reports, Katy was open to taking picture with fans while at the same time fans being respectful of her privacy. After her trip, Katy also took the time to tweet out the following:
"@katyperry We just done tore up DOLLYWOOD'S turkey legs & had a helluva country bumpin time! DOLLYWOOD photo diary of the bbq bb's coming 2morrow..."
"In honor of @Dollywood check a #TBT of @KaceyMusgraves & I doing 1 of my fav @DollyParton songs: Here You Come Again: http://on.cmt.com/1pFAI5t"
