As Disney World and Universal Orlando begin to reopen parts of their resorts, SeaWorld Orlando has begun testing one of its coasters with riders wearing masks. On Tuesday, SeaWorld conducted dozens of test runs of its Mako coaster, according to Midway Mayhem, which captured the runs on video. Riders in each of the test runs wore different types of masks. And none of the masks, according to reports, flew off. FULL STORY While some businesses in several Pennsylvania counties may plan to carefully reopen under the “yellow” designation of Governor Tom Wolf’s color-coded COVID-19 recovery plan, the amusement park industry isn’t one of them.
Groups of 25 or more are still banned until reaching the “green” stage of the governor’s plan. And it’s hard to maintain a safe social distance while standing in line to ride a brand new roller coaster, for example, or sitting next to a stranger on a ride. “The economic damage caused by this crisis on the hospitality and service industry is greater than 9/11 and the 2008/2009 recession, combined,” said Garrett Gallia of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts. “Unfortunately, the longer the necessary mitigation steps are in place to combat coronavirus, such as travel restrictions and social distancing, the deeper the impact to HE&R.” Hersheypark, perhaps Hershey Entertainment’s most well-known destination, had big plans for 2020. This summer was to see the debut of the park’s newest roller coaster, Candymonium. The super-coaster will not only be the tallest in the Derry Township park, but tied for Kennywood’s Steel Curtain as the tallest in the state. The start of the summer season was also to be the opening of Chocolatetown, a massive expansion to the park’s entrance that would include several shops, restaurants and other attractions. Adventureland is hinting at a new attraction at the Altoona theme park next year. The park posted an image on Facebook Sunday afternoon that appears to show a knight slaying a fire-breathing dragon. KCCI contacted Adventureland in which they sent the same image with no comment. FULL STORY Over the past quarter century, Great Coasters International, Inc. (GCII) has created 29 wooden roller coasters. In all instances, these were highly marketable attractions. But in many cases, they stand as a park’s most signature ride.
In December of 1994, GCII officially began, and in that winter of 1995, work began in earnest on the company’s first project. One constant from its two founding partners to its staff today is passion. It’s not just hard work, but the love of what the company does. GCII President Clair Hain Jr. founded the company with coaster designer Mike Boodley. Boodley was a coaster enthusiast from a young age, and his zeal would lead him to the right people in the industry. His formative years had him doing work at Philadelphia Toboggan Company where he absorbed everything like a sponge, particularly from legendary designer John Allen when he would visit PTC in his retirement. Construction of the new Epic Universe theme park in Orlando won’t resume until the nation’s economy begins to revive, a key leader of Universal Orlando’s parent company said Wednesday. “All things considered, it’s a big capital swing, so better to really march forward with that when we have just a bit more visibility on what’s going on with the economy post-COVID,” Comcast Chief Financial Officer Mike Cavanagh said during a virtual interview at the J.P. Morgan Investor Conference. “I can’t tell you when that’s going to be when we revisit it.” FULL STORY JACKSON TOWNSHIP, NJ
