It might be September, but that’s already Halloween season at the nation’s theme parks. I just returned from Orlando, where Universal Studios Florida opened this year’s edition of the nation’s largest theme park Halloween event — Halloween Horror Nights. Soon, the nation’s original theme park Halloween event will return at Knott’s Scary Farm.
I love events like these because they bring theme parks back to their roots in live theater. Events such as Halloween Horror Nights and Knott’s Scary Farm don’t rely on expensive, high-tech rides to thrill their fans. It’s all about what the parks call their scareactors — the people in the masks and makeup whose job is to make you scream. “It’s the human aspect of what a theme park is able to offer,” Michael Aiello, Senior Director of Entertainment Creative Development at Universal Orlando, said to me before the event kicked off. “There’s eye contact — a connection that I don’t think a ride attraction can do nearly as well. That human connection is really important and it’s why Horror Nights has done as well as it has.” FULL STORY Halloween Horror Nights is officially underway at Universal Studios — and we’ve been through all 10 houses. Check out our totally wicked guide to this year’s mazes.

It's the most wonderful time of the year. No not Christmas. I'm talking about that awkward time in-between Labor Day and Halloween where you're not sure what to do and neither does the weather, so you just say "whatever" and make September all about Halloween preparations. That's exactly what Cedar Point is doing, as their Annual Halloweekends begin on Friday and runs every weekend (Friday, Saturday, & Sunday) from this weekend all the way up til the weekend of October 27th. Two people were arrested Saturday night after causing a disturbance at Darien Lake Theme Park. 30-year-old Rachael Grace and 39-year-old Jeremy Triesler, both of Ohio, were arrested after Genesee County Sheriff's Deputies say Grace became angry and threw a bucket of water at a food service employee, which caused $594.15 in damages. They say Triesler then became belligerent and used obscene language, causing a disturbance in the park. When security tried to intervene, they say he shoved the officer. FULL STORY GOSHEN, NY
Lovers of all things LEGO are going to have one more reason to be happy next year, when LEGOLAND New York Resort opens. This will be the company's third LEGO theme park to open in the United States; there are currently locations in California and Florida. While the opening date isn't set, when the ribbon is cut, it's going to be the largest LEGOLAND ever built to date. The theme park opening date will be sometime in 2020, with the LEGOLAND Hotel following in 2021. FULL STORY AUSTELL, GA

Gone, but not forgotten. It's been 10 years since the last time we were able to ride at the speed of fright: Busch Gardens Williamsburg's iconic Big Bad Wolf roller coaster shut down for good on September 7, 2009. Developed by Arrow Dynamics, the Big Bad Wolf had thrilled park guests for a quarter-century. In fact, the 2009 season at Busch Gardens began with the park celebrating the Wolf's 25-year milestone. The ride, with its sleek red track and suspended black cars, had become one of the highlight attractions at Busch Gardens, perhaps second only to the Loch Ness Monster. Riders would be steered through a Bavarian village, narrowly missing buildings before finally taking a final steep, 100-foot drop down to the park's Rhine River. FULL STORY Cedar Fair LP said Thursday the company collected record revenues at its chain of 11 amusement parks and five water parks through the first eight months of 2019.
The company said that through Sunday its preliminary figures show that revenue increased 8 percent, or about $86 million, to a record $1.12 billion compared with $1.03 billion for the same period in 2018. Cedar Fair — which is based in Sandusky at its flagship park, Cedar Point — said the growth was fueled by attendance of 21 million guests, which equated to a 6 percent increase, or 1.1 million visits, compared to the first eight months a year ago. In-park per capita spending increased by 3 percent or $1.24 to $48.79, and out-of-park revenues — largely stays at the company’s 2,300 hotel rooms and luxury RV park spaces — increased by 9 percent, or $10 million, to $130 million.
