HOW DISNEY’S FIRST-EVER MARVEL LAND IS NOTHING LIKE STAR WARS: GALAXY’S EDGE (BEYOND THE OBVIOUS)3/17/2020 ANAHEIM, CA
Within less than two years, Disney Parks will have unleashed two major lands based on what are arguably The Walt Disney Company’s largest franchises. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, a 14-acre expansion to both Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida and Disneyland Park in California, opened in phases starting last year; while Avengers Campus, due to Disney California Adventure in July 2020, is just now revealing what it will contain. The debut of these two expanses, both inextricably tied to their own worlds of films, television, and published media, and owned by the same organization and built at the same theme park resort, would leave some to expect a number of similarities. In actuality, Avengers Campus and Galaxy’s Edge are poised to be unbelievably different. (Ed. note: Disneyland’s theme parks are currently closed for COVID-19 prevention and currently slated to reopen in April.) FULL STORY

In another display of the community helping each other out in times of need, Six Flags Over Georgia announced they would be donating nearly one ton of food to a local charity. The local theme park said it would be donating more 1,600 pounds of fruit, vegetables and dairy to the Center for Children & Young Adults in Marietta amid school closures and quarantines. “Six Flags Over Georgia and White Water are committed to serving our community through this unprecedented situation,” said Park President, Dale Kaetzel. If you haven’t had “It’s the End of the World As We Know It” stuck in your head the past few days, these photos of empty Orlando theme parks just might make you start humming it. Coronavirus concerns have shut down major Orlando theme parks — Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Studios Orlando, and SeaWorld Orlando — and they look like ghost towns. Shared by Orlando-area reporter Jerry Hume on Twitter, the images are a little bit eerie and definitely shocking to anyone who is used to Disney World and Universal Studios’ usual crowds! Here, we see the queue at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which is typically packed with people waiting to visit Toy Story Land and Galaxy’s Edge. FULL STORY MONTICELLO, IN
The owners of Indiana Beach, the 94-year-old vacation destination that generations of Region residents have flocked to for a summer family getaway, are now optimistic the amusement and water park could reopen as soon as this year under new ownership. No deal has been done, and no buyer has been lined up, but potential buyers have expressed serious interest in reopening the popular summer attraction as soon as this year, according to the current owner. FULL STORY Theme parks have had to make a tough decision recently with the changing landscape of risk due to the COVID-19 virus. All major regional parks that would typically be open in March have either closed or delayed their opening until the first weekend in April, for now. This move is consistent with other entertainment options, like sports, theaters, and conventions, that would put people together in large gatherings.
If you had plans to visit any park near or far from your home please check their website before heading out, you don't want to have a Wallyworld moment. This temporary effort to keep people spread out and not spread this virus will hopefully pay off with a quick return to normal operations and daily lives. However this still may affect parks with later opening dates too, as many job fairs and hiring events have been cancelled or postponed as well. Please be safe and listen to advice on when it is safe to gather and travel from local government. Disneyland and Disney California Adventure are in the process of shutting down and will be closed for the rest of March, an unprecedented move for the United States’ theme park industry amid fears of the coronavirus pandemic. Walt Disney Co. made the announcement late Thursday afternoon that the California parks will close down as Saturday. The news release did not give an update on Disney World, which is currently open and has not announced any plans to change hours or close. Disney World spokespeople did not immediately respond to a request for comment. FULL STORY ORLANDO, FL
Though Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance continues to be a massive draw at Disney's Hollywood Studios and Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway is a certified hit, the next big addition to this park won't actually be a ride, show or restaurant, but rather an "experience" extend the Star Wars experience beyond Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. Named Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, this new specialty hotel will allow fans to experience the Star Wars universe in a whole new way. Instead of just having decor "inspired" by Star Wars (like the movie-based wings of the Art of Animation) guests who stay in this hotel will be able to take part in an immersive experience designed from the ground up to be a living adventure that gives guests the chance to become the star of their own Star Wars Story. FULL STORY Our focus here at Theme Park Insider long has been on the world's most popular theme parks. People most like reading about the parks that people are most likely to visit, after all. But I've also long considered it part of my responsibility running the site to guide people's attention to worthy parks around the world that don't show up on the TEA/AECOM Theme Index attendance lists — parks such as Holiday World and Silver Dollar City, the Legoland theme parks, and Warner Bros. World and Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi.
