Cedar Fair Entertainment Company (NYSE: FUN), a leader in regional amusement parks, water parks and immersive entertainment, today reported preliminary net revenues through July 8, 2018, of approximately $563 million, on 11.1 million guest visits, average in-park per capita spending of $45.87 and out-of-park revenues of $70 million. This period represents approximately 40% of the Company's total operating days for 2018.
When compared with the same period a year ago, net revenues were down 2%, or $10 million, the result of a 3%, or 314,000-visit, decrease in attendance. This was partially offset by a 3%, or $2 million, increase in out-of-park revenues, including resort accommodations, and a slight increase in average in-park per capita spending when compared with the same period last year. Cedar Point wants to continue to expand its footprint outside the amusement park’s boundaries. A recent zoning change helps push forward a project to build two 9,700-square-foot dormitory buildings for park employees on Third and Fourth streets, all in the 2000 block. The land recently rezoned on Third and Fourth streets in Sandusky acts as a buffer to separate this property and adjacent parcels, all zoned “commercial recreation,” from area homes and residents. It’s not known when the dormitories could be built or at what cost. “We support the rezoning because it is adjacent to existing commercial recreation (properties) and will not negatively impact surrounding properties,” city planning director Angie Byington said. The city planning department recommended this change to the commission. FULL STORY VANCOUVER, BC
Unfavourable economic circumstances are why Vancouver’s beloved wooden roller-coaster is still standing today, say roller-coaster experts and enthusiasts. The Playland Wooden Coaster, revered by amusement park enthusiasts across the continent, turns 60 this summer. Built in 1958, it is one of 153 wooden roller-coasters in North America and managed to survive the wooden roller-coaster purge of the 1970s, said Laura Ballance, spokesperson for Playland. A lawsuit ruling in favor of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts could result in the theme park operator getting a $1.2 million refund, according to Orange County’s property appraiser. In 2016, Orange County’s property appraiser raised the value of Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resort to $336 million dollars – a 118 percent increase from the year before. That meant Disney paid more in taxes that year for Orange County schools. A judge ruled in favor of Disney this week, saying the county’s methodology was flawed. That means the theme park could get a $1.2 million dollar refund. “The judge’s decision to reduce the market value in the disputed assessment will result in a refund of over $1.2 million that Orange County Public Schools received in tax dollars from Disney,” Singh wrote in a statement. The pink and yellow brick building on Forsyth Street almost screams at people as they drive through downtown Jacksonville. Inside is a world of animatronics — superheroes and dinosaurs, skeletons and zombies, creatures and cartoon characters — that Sally Corp. quietly creates unknown to much of the public. “I’ve driven past Sally over a thousand times and never really knew what was going on in here and never really thought about it,” said Rebecca Patel, one of a few dozen people given a recent “Behind the Themes” tour. “When I saw it, I thought wow, that’s pretty neat and fantastic that this is right here in Jacksonville.” Sally Corp., a garage-based company of 41 employees, specializes in “dark rides” at theme parks where spectators can sit in a vehicle and go through a building where there are often interactive features such as a blaster/target games or 3D scenes. A new theme park is preparing to open its doors later in 2018. It’s called “Evermore Park” and it is a theme park no one has ever experienced before because it’s designed based on the imagination of its creator, Ken Bretschneider. Bretschneider has been creating “Evermore-like” Halloween experiences in Pleasant Grove and has now developed a team of passionate artists to help create his “Evermore Park” dream. His design and production director, Josh Steadman shared some details with Fox13 Wednesday morning on The Fourth of July while he was with the “Evermore Park” float in Provo’s Freedom Festival. Most public spaces aren’t designed with people with autism in mind. Unfortunately, there are few places that this is more evident than amusement parks, cinemas, and theaters — places intended for entertainment and quality time with family. Picture the entrance to Disney World, or Universal Studios: Bright, colorful, blinking lights surround the entrance sign. Dramatic orchestral music radiates from speakers in every possible direction: building walls, the sky, the ground. Thousands of people swat at one another with sweaty arms for a place in line. It’s overwhelming for most people. Now imagine also dealing with sensory sensitivity — one of the most common symptoms of autism. Noise is louder. Lights are brighter. Touch is more potent. At worst, it can be like being trapped inside the THX opening. Sensory sensitivity can make a somewhat hectic environment into something physically painful and emotionally overpowering. Children with autism often have trouble putting this feeling into words, meaning that they may shout or cry. FULL STORY TAMPA BAY, FL

A little more than a year from now in a galaxy not far away, Disney’s Hollywood Studios will open the gates to a much-anticipated new land full of smugglers, resistance fighters — and inevitably tourists — that executives hope will transform the park 20 years after it opened. Transformation, in fact, was the buzzword at last week’s opening of the park’s most recent expansion, the 11-acre Toy Story Land. “We’re taking a big step in the evolution of Disney’s Hollywood Studios as we transform it from a place that took you behind the scenes into one that actually puts you and your family at the center of the action,” said Bob Chapek, chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences, and Consumer Products, at a June 29 dedication event in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
